With all the amazing photographers out there, it's easy to get overwhelmed with awesome talent. I'll scroll through a gallery (it can be wedding, fine art, documentary, travel, or even instagram) and just stare. How can people be so amazing?! There are so many photographers out there that do stunning, inspiring and amazing work. It's easy to want to switch your style to look like someone else's (who is usually more successful) and abandon what you love to create. Maybe it's just me, but what I have learned is that, just like every person, every photographer has a style. Some are similar to mine, some totally different. So instead of feeling overwhelmed and wanting to throw in the towel, I have decided to be inspired and use that to further develop my style, the way I see things. And since there is only one of me, I don't want to be a copy.

I love that the photo world can be so incredibly diverse, sharing, uplifting and challenging all at the same time. It's scary putting yourself out there, risking failure and opening yourself up to haters (because there will always, always be haters), but I would prefer any of those over remaining to scared to try. I like what Sylvia Plath said about her craft: I write only because there is a voice within me that will not be still.

And the most important voice you have is your own.

Things that Make Me Smile #6

A Photo A Day from Urbanoutfitters.com - I don't know whether to love or hate Pinterest and by hate, I mean consider it the greatest creation in the world. Although it makes me want an entire new wardrobe, desserts at any waking moment and has me laughing a ton, there are a lot of really good ideas on there and I came across this and thought "well, I turn 30 this year, so why not document the year it happens?" Nine days in, I'm doing good so far.

2012 - As previously mentioned, because this year I turn 30, it is going to be one for the books! And this is my theme song, at least the chorus anyway :)

Sherlock - My roommate and I stumbled across this three episode series produced by the BBC while browsing through Netflix one day. To be honest I thought it was going to be lame, but turns out it is a creative modern day version of Sherlock and Watson, but also seriously funny. Sherlock's character had me cracking up. That dry humor and wit worked perfectly. And after my heartbreak from LOST and Prison Break (who kills off the main character???? L.A.M.E.), I need a show that won't hurt my heart :). The one downside is that there are only 3 episodes with only three more airing this month on the BBC. And extra fun fact, the actor who plays Watson (Martin Freeman) will be on the big screen later this year as Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit. Automatic increase of awesome.

C.S. Lewis - I'm not sure where this British vibe came from, but I've been reading and re-reading some of his works and once again I have decided he was a genuis. Reading his stuff makes me really want time travel to be possible so I can go back in time and hang out with the Inklings at the Eagle and Child every week.

Q&A a Day book - This was one of my Christmas presents. I love it! It's a daily journal that asks a different question every day with space for the next 5 years. Did I mention that I love it?! I can only imagine the laughs I will have looking back 5 years at how I answered.

The Gatehouse | Round Rock Wedding Venue

One of my early Texas weddings was Kelley and Joe's. I loved every minute of it. Everything was done so beautifully, from the flowers, to the decorations, the food and of course the people! So when I found out that they had officially moved to Austin and created an amazing wedding venue, which Sara and James recently had their wedding at, I was so excited to see how it would turn out. And it is amazing! I love it! It's beautiful and I want to have a party there...immediately.

Sara + James | Round Rock, TX Wedding

The wedding of Sara and James was awesome for so many reasons! Last year I had the privilege of shooting Sara’s brother, Joe and now wife Kelley’s wedding and not only was that wedding beautiful, I quickly learned that the family is so much fun and so great to work with. Second, Sara and James had their wedding at Joe and Kelley’s new (as in this was the first event there!) venue that they built, The Gatehouse. A to the MAZING! I have a post coming just on the place, but trust me, it is so gorgeous and it was perfect for Sara and James’ wedding. I want to plan a party, just so I can have it there!

NOLA! | New Orleans, Louisiana

The day started out rainy, windy and cold, but the weather decided to play nice for the rest of my time in New Orleans. It's always great to visit and it turned out extra awesome because I had the chance to see my sister, dad and other family.

Oak Alley Plantation...and a creepy house | Vacherie, Louisiana

If you ever are driving along the Mississippi on the Old River Road, be sure to stop in a little town called Vacherie, Louisiana, home to beautiful Oak Alley Plantation. Not only does it have an intriguing and interesting history, the oaks the line the entrance are a sight to behold. I don’t say this lightly, but the view from the second floor overlooking the row of majestic oak trees might be one of the most amazing sights in the state of Louisiana.

And I don't think I will ever get enough of random abandoned structures. They creep me out like nobodies business, but I am still fascinated.

We attempted to get a picture with one of us in front of the house, but then completely freaked out when Mariko was attacked. Could have been a fly, but after watching way too many episodes of Supernatural at the hotel in NOLA, you just never know...

There are a few things you need to complete a successful marathon:

1) Awesome training partners
2) Amazing cheer squad
3) And plenty of shot blocks

It helps (just a bit) when you train for 6 months (267 miles worth!) and keep your eyes on the end goal! Be prepared to lose a toe nail or two and not be able to move for a while once you are done. :) But trust me - it is worth it! Crossing that finish line was amazing!!!Here's a picture my friend grabbed right at mile 26. I was pretty happy with .2 to go!

Everyone can use a little South...seriously

A little South can do a girl some good! After a not so long drive, NOLA, Edgard and Baton Rouge were great cities to relax, see family, friends, some sights, watch LSU beat Bama, eat tons of great food and laugh - a lot!

Whenever I'm visiting, I always get to hear new stories from my dad about what it was like growing up in Edgard and there's quite a few that leave me saying "Wha???" My favorite from this past weekend? The fact that my grandpa and great uncles ran a night club on Lapeyrolerie Lane and my dad used to join the party and dance in the club when he was a little five year old.

Don't let the quietness of Edgard fool ya - this place is hoppin!

Life is a Highway!

If you are into photography (kind of like I am) then you have probably heard of sites such as Flickr and Photojojo.

I have a photostream of all my blog photos on Flickr and Photojojo not only has a bunch of random, fun photo related stuff to buy, they also have a Photo Time Capsule that you can get sent to your email. Twice a month, they email me random pictures from my Flickr photostream from a few months ago. This week I got an email with this picture:

My first thought was of Bilbo Baggins and his hobbit adventures and my second was that it fit perfect because today starts a road trip adventure to the land of Louisiana. I love a little fun and usually if I am driving, we get lost. Which in my mind is a serendipitous adventure :)

Things that make me smile!

It’s Friday!! Even though my life seems to be consumed by running (16 more days till the race!) and all kinds of random busyness, life is good and so that means it is time for the fourth installment of Things That Make Me Smile!

Music is a lifeline for me. Seriously. And right now, Adele's album 21, is on the top of my playlist. That girl can sing. The track on repeat? Set Fire to the Rain or One and Only.
One of my favorite authors is Francine Rivers. Two of my all time favorite books were written by her. Each has been read multiple times too. No, I will not admit the amount, because when I actually count it out, I embarrass myself. One of those books is Redeeming Love (which re-tells the story of Hosea) and I now officially have a signed copy! She was at my brother’s work for a grand opening kick-off in California and because my dad loves me :), he stood in line to get my copy signed. This book nerd is way happy!

The weather. Tomorrow is supposed to be a high of 72 degrees. Yesssssssssss!
My baby girl! No explanation needed really. She’s the cutest one year old around if you ask me.

Gabbie turns 1!

Behind those insanely chubby cheeks, is a little girl who has completely stolen my heart! and this little girl is officially 1 year old today. This was the very first picture I received of Gabs:

I love getting updates, pictures and videos of this little firecracker. She loves to interrupt when my sister and I are on the phone (but that cute little laugh and squeal are the best thing ever), loves her mama and pretty much has everyone wrapped around her finger! But can you really blame us??

4 Questions with Omar | Austin, Texas Photography

As a journalism student back in the day, I had the chance to interview all types of people, from star athletes to guest lecturers to professors and anyone in between. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting new and diverse people, but even after the hundredth interview, I would still get a little nervous before each one. I didn't know the person and that was enough to make me nervous. On top of that I freaked about things like, what if I messed up the questions (and don't worry that happened), what if I ran out of questions (yep, happened too), and how dorky does my 18 pound tape recorder (non-digital days of course) look?? I am going to assume I looked pretty legit.

So when the opportunity came about to do a 4 Questions with someone I had never met, I was both excited and nervous. My friend Doug's brother, Omar, was in town from the East Coast and it worked out to meet up with him on a perfect Texas morning.

It turns out I really had nothing to worry about (there were only 4 Questions, so that would have been pretty special to mess up). In the short time I spent talking with Omar, it is clear that he is one of the most genuine, compassionate and real people you will ever meet. His passion for what he does, his family, his faith and life is contagious and I'm so glad I had the opportunity to meet Omar and feature him on 4 Questions. Thanks Omar for sharing some of your life with me (and the World Wide Web).

1. What is something about your life right now that you would have never imagined 5 years ago?

I started doing Prison Ministry in 2003 and I would not have imagined that I would still be doing it now in 2011. I’ve traveled all over, 42 states, doing prison ministry, been well received with people asking for me to come back and things like that. All because of a passion. I wanted to do something. I was tired of seeing people that I knew go to prison. So I said there has to be something I can say or do. I didn’t have much to say, but I had to say something. So I started. I called up this prison in New Jersey. I wrote a couple of poems and asked if I could come share them with the inmates. And now I’ve been all over. God was able to take my small passion, my wanting to do something and turn it into something huge. It’s a beautiful thing. There’s a saying, God isn’t concerned about your ability, but about your availability. As long as we are available, let Him use you. He will take you wherever.

2. What is one thing that you would go back and do differently if you could?
I would have valued things differently. I know that sounds arbitrary, but I think when we are young (in college and 20s) we value the wrongs things. I grew up thinking that I need a nice car and I need to make a bunch of money. We find ourselves spending time and wasting time searching for the wrong things. You realize that isn’t what really matters. It’s not about having a huge house, car with rims, the prettiest girl in the club. I feel like I wasted a lot of time trying to get things that don’t matter. I could have been doing things like prison ministry, doing things that changed the world, impacted my community. I could have started that a lot sooner had I been focused on things that really mattered, not the worldly and expensive things because in the end that’s not going to make you happy.

3. What is one of the happiest moments of your life?

It would have to say two: My wedding day and the day my son was born. My wedding was just a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful day. It was just amazing. My wife and I both waited and that was huge, so not only was it an inside joke, but everyone new that we loved each other. We had actually met 6 years earlier, dated long distance for a year, broke up for a year and then got back together when she moved to Philly. We dated for a year and then got engaged. Everyone knew that it was supposed to be. From the first day we met we just clicked (he set up by a friend while he was in LA on business) and its always been good.

And then the day my son was born, it was like the love between my wife and I was a being now. He was a physical symbol of our love for each other. Because we loved each other, this happened. He is a sign of our love. I was Mr. Cool the whole time at the hospital and then when they came and handed him to me I just lost it. I couldn’t explain it. It was amazing. It was one of the moments. It all just hit me. We’ve come together and we’ve made this new being. He’ll live past us. Even when we’re gone, he’ll still be here.

4. What is one piece of advice you want to pass along to the next generation?
Put God first. That would be my number one thing. If you seek Him, He will direct your ways, your path. I feel like that’s the answer, that’s the key. We’ve gotten so far away from that. We have all types of problems; divorce, wars we’re fighting. If more people could focus on biblical principles, putting God first in their lives, we wouldn’t have so many things going wrong. We’re getting further and further away from God and things are messing up. I believe it is the answer. It’s tough for some people to accept, but I believe that if you really want your life what it can be, really want a blessed life, you have to follow God, follow what the Bible says. Do onto others what you would have unto you…all those principles. If we could follow those, this world would be a better place.

I'll end with a quote I came across that I think fits pretty well:"You have to be willing to be uncomfortable. Be comfortable being uncomfortable. It may get tough, but it's a small price to pay for living a dream." - Peter McWilliams

Lately I have been encouraged by a handful of people who are following their passions, by their stories of where that has taken/taking them, the excitement of diving into something new and choosing to live a more than ordinary. For me, it is so easy for me to get caught up in the busy-ness of life that complacency can sneak in. And I don’t want that. I don’t want the status quo of comfortable living that isn’t making a difference in this world. I want to throw caution in the wind and trust the passion the Lord has given me.

I recently came across two quotes from people (who may have slightly impacted society) and was even more so encouraged to live life with no regrets. This first quote by Steve Jobs fits extremely well when choosing what you will do for a career - “The only way to do great work is to love what you do." I don’t want to wake up 50 years from now and look back at a career that may have paid the bills, but didn't make me happy. And since life is more than just your career, I like what Mark Twain once said: “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

So whether it be about career, love or anything else in life (to steal a quote I found on pinterest), I would rather live a life of “oh wells” than “what ifs.”

4 Questions with Malcolm | Austin, Texas Photography

When I looked through the camera lens I was caught off guard. I knew this was my brother, but for a split second I caught a glimpse of my dad many decades younger. There’s so much I can write and say about my brother Malcolm. How he can be a goof ball (which if we’re all being honest is much of the time :), but also be able to talk about real life – the good, the bad, the ugly. How our inside jokes make absolutely no sense to the rest of the world, but we can laugh by the mere mention of two words or one line. Or how much of a disaster it was to take a college course together (German) and try and do a skit together. Out of a seven-line skit, I think we managed to “act” out two before it turned into laughter. At least the class thought we were funny.

I can talk about how amazed I am at his ability to pick up languages (he speaks three fluent), how he can talk to anyone at any time anywhere, his passion and how he comes out stronger in life through whatever it is that life hands him. How we can be so different, yet still be so close. Having a brother is seriously one of the greatest joys of my life.

Malkie - thanks for everything, from the laughs, your love, your example of faith and all the mems! Love you and come visit!!

1. What is something about your life right now that you would have never imagined 5 years ago?
Five years ago, I never thought I'd be working in retail part time at minimum wage, but you got to do what you can, and I'm grateful for the help I get from my parents.

2. What is one thing that you would go back and do differently if you could?
I truly love learning foreign languages, but I think I would have chosen a different major so that there would be more career opportunities out there. I would totally still do something with foreign languages as well.

3. What is one of the happiest moments of your life?
One of the happiest moments of my life was when the surgeon brought my niece Gabriella to the window for us to see her the first time the night she was born.

4. What is one piece of advice you want to pass along to the next generation?
I want the next generation to know about Jesus Christ and not just as a figure in history, but as the living God who came down from out of eternity into time and dwelled among us. I want the next generation to know that He died for everyone's sins to save us!

4 Questions with Nicole | Austin, Texas Photography

I wish I had the words to describe Nicole, those perfect words to let you know just how amazing she is. Nicole is one of the nicest, sweetest, most compassionate people on planet earth. You can't help but walk away more happy after hanging out with her for a few minutes. She encourages, she listens, she is a friend that everyone should have. And now she is off to a new adventure in the great state of Oregon. That state doesn't even know the awesomeness that now lives there.

Nicole, thanks for being an amazing woman and reminding me what it means to love people all the time. You really do inspire more people than you know and to top it off, your fashion style belongs in a magazine! Oh and our little taxi adventure in San Fran still has me laughing months later…The joys of creepy taxi rides!

I cannot wait to hear stories about all your adventures and how the Lord works through you! I don’t think I can say enough how much your emails, text messages and friendship have truly blessed my life and made it better. So thank you for being you and I’m glad the world gets to catch a glimpse of that through these questions.

1. What is something about your life right now that you would never imagined 5 years ago?
I love life! As cliché as that sounds, I truly love how God brings you places you would have never imagined. My life has changed drastically with a recent move away from my family and sunshine. Where I am in my life is something that I would have never imagined 5 years ago. I attended college in Portland, Oregon five years ago and always swore this is the LAST place I would ever live again and look where God has me :). I am living in Portland, Oregon working in pediatric oncology, which is in a hospital (another area I said was the LAST place I would work ;) and I wouldn’t change either for the world at this point.

2. What is one thing that you would go back and do differently if you could?
Throughout high school and up until recently I thought life was easier if I didn’t stick up for myself. I didn’t want to make any waves :)… but slowly God is working on me and showing me the importance of valuing yourself so that you can be fully available to do the work He has in store - so He can work through me.

3. What is one of the happiest moments of your life?
I love how God works through the small moments and nothings in life. There is not one defining happiest moment in my life, but I have had many cheerful and privileged moments that bring me so much joy. I have been honored to work with some of the most inspirational kids and families enduring some of the toughest life situations. Just being a small part of their life and journey has brought so much joy to my life. I am also so happy when I am spending quality time with my friends and family.

4. What is one thing you want the next generation to know?
Life is so short... live every moment for God and love those around you with everything you have. Don’t worry about what others think of you, you are wonderful and amazing in your own unique way.

Even if schools have started back up, thus increasing the length of my morning and evening commute, these past two weeks have been pretty awesome and there's been plenty to make this girl happy! The temperature is even cooling down! Granted it's by about six degrees, but I'll take it!!

So to kick off September and Fall, here's another installment of things that make me happy :)

Del Taco: I know my love of this fast food chain is a bit unreasonable, but some things I can't change. And now there is one that opened right outside of Dallas. A mere three hours away.
Shutterfly: I love Shutterfly for so many reasons and use them for all of my non professional picture needs. I love the photo books you can create. It's so much easier than massive photo albums that take up so much space! And if you want to check it out, you get 50 free prints for signing up!
Tax Free Weekend: This is a couple weeks old, but the weekend before schools start in Texas is tax free. That's code for go clothes shopping immediately. Which I did. Immediately.

Amanda + Andrew, Part 1 | Orange County Wedding Photographer

What more can I say about this wedding? What an amazing blessing it was for me to be a part of it! We took pictures beforehand at the Historic George Key Ranch. I am so glad Amanda and her mom Toni found this place! I went to the elementary school right across the street (go Sierra Vista Eagles!), but had completely forgotten about the field trips we took to this place. It was perfect!!! Plus, every single person who was a part of this wedding was truly amazing – Andrew and Amanda are lucky to have so many awesome people to surround them!

Andrew – It was so awesome to see you become a husband! It seems like Mariko just told me that you started dating Amanda. Even though it still makes me feel old, it has been such a blessing to see you grow these past few years, from Esperanza football days (even though I know you wish you could have been a Golden Hawk), going into the Coast Guard, road tripping with your awesome family to DC, and seeing you trust in God’s perfect plan! Amanda – you were such a stunning bride and everything I have heard is definitely true! You have the sweetest spirit and your family is awesome too! The Barnes family is lucky to gain you as a wife, daughter and sister!

4 Questions with Doug | Austin, Texas Photography

His name is Doug, but all of us at the office called him Dougie Fresh or Douglas Melvin Fisher (totally much more fitting and more professional too). I am sure if you asked him, he’ll say that he just loved it. Totally.

I had the chance to work with Doug at none other than Dahill, A Xerox Company and he was one of the guys that made the office a fun place to work, always cracking jokes and just being Doug. And no matter what he might say, I won the dance off at our company Christmas party. (You should be jealous of my co-workers – really).

Douglas Melvin, I'm excited for what lies ahead for you, it's awesome to think of all the possibilities! I'm glad there are still lots of laughs even if we don't work the 9-5 at the same place anymore.

And...I hope this makes you famous. :)

1. What is something about your life right now that you would never imagined 5 years ago?

The obvious answer is living in Austin, TX. I grew up and lived in Charlotte, NC until about 2 years ago. Moving out here with my twin brother and making a whole new group of friends outside of where I was raised is definitely hard to imagine.

2. What is one thing that you would go back and do differently if you could?

I would go back and change my major in college to something I am more passionate about. Something in Film, Radio and Television is definitely up my alley.

3. What is one of the happiest moments of your life?

It’s hard to say, however one of the best moments came when I was in college. I led a trip to Harlem NYC to work with under-privileged kids for spring break. On the last day there, we had to say goodbye to the kids. One kid I’ll never forget named Christian, while crying, hugged me and told me not to leave. I guess it was bittersweet, but definitely one of the happiest moments knowing that we made a difference.

4. What is the one thing you want the next generation to know?

Since I’m a Generation Y’er, the next generation is technically generation “Z”. I would probably want them to know that texting and driving is not cool and to hurry up and make a flying car. Marty McFly said we’d have one by now.

I am okay with the fact that the world wide web might not find my marathon updates that exciting, but one day I will look back through my blogs and I am sure when I read the posts about my marathon training, I will laugh and ask myself what was I thinking?!

Days until the San Antonio Rock and Roll: 91 days

Total # of miles ran to date: 105, which funny enough is the temperature that I sometimes have to train in.

Weeks into training: 13

Shot Block flavor that is terrible: Black Cherry

Training conditions: As previously mentioned, the temperature is close to that of Hades, but running in humid rain is fun too.

Total # of victims to eat it mid-run: Still only at 1

Pace: Faster than when I started!

Current long run: 10 miles

Amount of knee pain: Still no crazy pain and this makes me happy.

I had an amazing time in Oregon this past weekend, so it makes this post really easy to write! So here are a few recent things that have mande me smile :)

College roommate's wedding - Yay for weddings and college b/f/f's reunion! I can not say enough how much these women mean to me!
Skydiving - Yep, I'm still thinking about how awesome that was and when I can go again.
Southwest Airlines - I used to be a hater because I like having an assigned seat. Then I grew up and realized that not having to pay an extra $50 round trip to bring luggage far outweighs me not having a number on my ticket. Plus with the app for smart phones, you can check in wherever you are. Awesomeness at my finger tips.

While I love my kindle app on my phone, I have been going through book withdrawals. I know, I scream cool kid. This spring I was in a “re-read my favorites” mood and threw in a couple friend’s recommendations, but recently I went on a book spree because I wanted some new material. This is what happens when I am left alone with approximately 5 minutes of free time, the world wide web and amazon.com. Tricksey, tricksey. Anyway, here’s my random complied summer list, even though my summer work/life schedule looks exactly the same as my fall, spring and winter work/life schedule.

Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis – Technically I have read parts of this, but since I don’t remember most of what I read (just some random quotes), I figure it counts as new. You can't go wrong with the man who created Narnia and was b/f/f's with the man who created Middle Earth.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak - To be honest, I'm not too sure what this book is about, but two close friends enjoyed it, so that was enough recommendation for me.

Counterfeit Gods by Timothy Keller - Really excited about this one!

Willie Mays: The Life, The Legend by James S Hirsch – Baseball actually isn’t one of my favorite sports to watch (although my career as a pitcher for the Rasmanian Devils in Jr. High would have totally blown your mind), but the players from the past are so fascinating. Maybe it has something to do with the whole America’s past time. Whatever it may be – this book is a good one so far!

Photo Trekking: A Traveling Photographer's Guide to Capturing Moments Around the World by Nick Onken - Traveling and photography? Sold!

Desiring God: Meditations of a Christian Hedonist by John Piper - I have been hearing about this book and Piper is pretty much amazing, so I figure it is a win win.

Outcasts United: A Refugee Team, an American Town by Warren St. John - Inspirational sport stories? Yes please.

American Photobooth by Nakki Goranin and David Haberstich This was actually a birthday gift that I was really excited about, especially since I have a slight obsession with photo booths.

Jumping out of an airplane is AWESOME!

Jumping out of airplane from 11,000 feet was quite possibly one of the most amazing experiences of my life! I wish I could accurately describe the rush you feel free falling, the freedom you feel floating down through the clouds and how beautiful it looks from so high up. I know that won't be the last time I go skydiving and it was the perfect way to celebrate turning 29!

I definitely recommend getting a video and photos for your first jump - totally worth it! There was definitely some good laughs watching the video and seeing all the pictures - I'm so glad I did!

And yes, I'm already trying to figure out my next adventure :) Oh and if you're in central Texas and want to know where to go skydiving, Sky Dive San Marcos is a great place to go!

365 days away from 30...

Well today I enter the last year of my 20’s. I turn 29. How this crept up on me, I don’t know. But I fully expect that this next year will be epically awesome squared because if the last year of my 20’s is anything like the how the first 9 years have been, then I am ready for one wild ride! This list of goals I created on my 27th birthday was lofty, but it’s been really good to look back every year and see what I have accomplished, what I haven’t and even the embracing the fact that some things just aren’t gonna happen. But I would rather fail 1,000 times (which with the random ideas that go through my head, I think I'm close :), then never try at all. That's what life is about right?!

Get busy living, or get busy dying is what I always say. Or maybe that was Morgan Freeman in Shawshank Redemption.
(Anything in purple is what I have actually completed)

1. Get myself back to Africa.
I've seen Lion King. Yes? No?

2. Re-read Lord of the Rings.

3. Finish my Masters Degree.
Yeah...about this one....M.A. for effort? I mean, I really like the History Channel???

4. I’m going to need about two more stamps in my passport. Minimum.
My passport expired. Insane to think that it's been 10 years since I first got mine. Good news - I can update my picture (I have no clue what I was thinking with my hair and shirt in my last picture). Bad news - rumor has it you have to turn in your old one. That better be reader error or I'm saying I lost mine.

5. Make cinnamon rolls from my grandma's recipe. It's a Lapeyrolerie thing :)

6. Try Salt Lick BBQ.
I love Salt Lick.

7. Be in another wedding. I'm not worried about this one, my friends are awesome squared.
Single men of the world - ARE YOU INSANE?? My friends are amazing...let's get on that. Thanks.

8. Shoot more destination weddings. I like planes.

9. Start an early 20's bible study.

10. Recruit more people for my team over at Mocha Club. Saving lives for $7.00 a month.

I still feel the same way about the ending as I did the minute it ended. L.A.M.E.

23. Attend WPPI, an epic wedding/portrait photographer annual convention.
I might switch this to Imaging USA because it's in New Orleans next year...visit the fam, listen to some speakers, win-win for everyone.

24. Do all that I can to make this world a better place. So much that needs to be done, but as MLK Jr. once said "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter."
I still feel this way, but that's TOTALLY not a goal. Way to take up some space me. Well played, well played.

25. I think it would be really amazing to have an art show.

26. Learn French and maybe refresh my Spanish.

27. Go on a road trip because road trips are fun. Plus you find the most random things ever.
I forgot how random driving through Louisiana can be. And how cops are quick to pull you over...Dad...

28. Visit Portland, Nashville, Seattle and the OKC. I'll use any excuse to visit friends.
Just need to make a stop in Seattle and I can check this one off.

29. Dare I say it...be fully self-employed.

30. Get a Shootsac. This epic little product is one more thing on my photo wish list :).
I did purchase one and I think it works great for weddings, but I ended up selling it and purchasing a Kelly Moore bag. I love it! With the traveling I do, this is definitely a better fit plus I love how it looks!

Amy + Jimmy | Oklahoma City Wedding Photography

I like to pretend I am a matchmaker, but since I have successfully matched all of zero couples, I have yet to earn that title. But my friends Jaci and Brittany are legit when it comes to matchmaking - and Jimmy and Amy are proof of that! Recently I was able to head up to Oklahoma City and celebrate with Jimmy and Amy as they exchanged wedding vows (with Jaci and Brittany as the MCs of course)!

Amy looked beautiful and Jimmy looked fantastic! I love seeing perfectly matched couples, couples like Amy and Jimmy, who compliment each other in every way, where they sense what the other needs before asked and making my job so fun, because taking pictures together is easy and natural!

Thank you Jimmy and Amy for letting me share in your special and beautiful day! It is always an honor when friends ask me to capture important moments! I am so blessed to call you both friends! Hopefully it won't be too long before the next visit to OKC (or if y'all want to head down to the ATX!!)!

Random times in Austin, but I love it.

This past weekend Kevin and Elaine (some of my closest amigos!!) came to Austin to visit. It was such a great weekend and I think we might have broken a record for the amount of ribs requested at Salt Lick (Family Style is unlimited amounts of food). I couldn’t move for several hours, but it was definitely worth it.

All that to say, life is just better with amazing friends to live it with! We headed down to one of the metro stops on the East side and lasted about 15 minutes because it was 157 degrees outside.

This is our "band shot" (Kevin's photo skills). We will never be a band, but we still like to take pics looking like we are :)

Kevin and Elaine! They also celebrated their 6th Wedding Anniversary in Austin. It seriously seems like they just got married!

If you ever go to see the bats, here is a freebie piece of advice: there are multiple waves. We thought we missed most of it, but still saw some and then as we were driving on Congress, a second wave of numerous bats took off for their nightly escapdes. It was a good laugh and probably awesome image of us all looking out the window and someone saying "Hey...there's more bats." Maybe I need to work on my tourism skills.

As a child, I never understood why adults would always complain at how fast time goes by or how quickly I was growing up. Then I became one and understood. Geez time, slow it down. But I'm okay with it almost being July soon because that means it's my birthday. I blame it on being the baby of the family, but I can't help it, I still get a little excited. Even if that means I am one year away from 30. y.i.k.e.s. Besides that, here's what made me smile:

Air conditioner because FOR THE LOVE OF CRUMBCAKES it is hot in Texas right now. You know it's bad when you think it's cooled down and the temp still registers at 97 degrees. Better than a high of 104.
Jelly Belly Sports Beans - My friend and fellow marathon trainer, Sara, introduced these to me. Tasty and gives you energy, which is exactly what I need when I am running way too many miles, way too early on a Saturday morning. Yet, I still enjoy it...
B/F/F's who bring back two bags of Del Taco mild sauce from California. Do I really need to explain this one?
Painting - I went back to Painting with a Twist with some girlfriends and added another piece to Gallery 1028. The Getty should be calling any day.
New running shoes - I used to have the same pair of running/tennis shoes for literally 5 years. But the thing about training for half and full marathons is that you go through shoes much more quickly. Plus, I can never really say no to a new pair of shoes.

I'll be honest, I want an iPhone just because of the Instagram app, but until that day my Retro Camera app for the Droid shall suffice.

One year later

It's already a year ago today that it happened. Heart attack, mom, hospital, open heart surgery. Words that I never want to hear again.

Yet, it's amazing what you see happen in times of pain and adversity. Co-workers/friends donating paid time off to me for the two weeks I was gone (because we all know I never have spare hours of that), my Texas friends more than ever being like family, my extended family always being at the hospital for support and keeping our minds occupied, Cali b/f/f's hanging out at the hospital and bringing In-N-Out and Del Taco, siblings once again showing me the strength family can be, a dad living out love, staying by my mom's side and making sure her needs were met and more, a mom showing incredible strength, courage and love and finally seeing God's faithful hand through all of it. When something happens that rocks your world, you can't help but come out stronger from it.

These days my Mama is doing great! And I am so so thankful. Some might say it has to do with the right dosage of various medications, different eating habits, etc. But I am going to throw my vote out there that it has something to do with a little red-headed blue-eyed girl with the biggest cheeks in the world.

You know how I said my "career" as a runner was over? Apparently by over, I meant that it will only take a few friends getting excited to run a full marathon (that's right, FULL not half) for me to come out of "retirement." So here I am, training for another marathon.

I don't know who I am either.

Except apparently insane.

But the good news is that I have a legit beginner plan that is 26 weeks long and I have an amazing group of women I am training with. We're all at different skill levels, but we keep each other motivated to stick to the plan and push each other to push ourselves. And when I don't want to run after work, they are there to convince me not to quit! I'm not fully committing until I can reach the 18 mile mark, but if anything, the training has been fun so far. That's right I said fun. Please refer to previous "apparently insane" statement.

So here are some stats:

Marathon: San Antonio Rock N Roll

Total # of miles ran to date: 22

Weeks into training: 3

Total # of shot blocks consumed: Around 500 (not really, but those things are money)

Weirdest training conditions: Humid rain. I.Love.Texas.

I love following other people's blogs. There are some creative lyrical geniuses and photographers that know the art of drawing a reader in. I've recently also become a fan of different "lists" series that some of my favorite bloggers have, whether Jasmine Stars' Kisses + Disses, Big Mama's Fashion Friday or Justin and Mary's Stuff We Love, that make an appearance on a weekly or bi-weekly manner. So I thought it might be something fun to do too!

So here's some things that have made me smile this past week!

The creation of the perfect "I'm writing" playlist on my iTunes. Things like X-Men First Class trailer music, Riders of Rohan and songs from the Braveheart soundtrack.
Finding a new quote about traveling, like this one by Ibn Battuta, the great 14th-century Moroccan scholar and traveler: "Traveling, it makes you lonely, then gives you a friend; it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller; it gives you a home in a thousand strange places, then leaves you a stranger in your own land."
Deciding to re-read my favorite book or series and enjoying it just as much as the first time.
Bacon. I'm not sure when this happened, but some crispy bacon for breakfast has hit.the.spot.
My glasses. Not sure why this made me smile this week, but it did :)

4 Questions with Zach | Austin, Texas Photography

A man (Ralph Waldo Emerson to be exact) once said: “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” I read that recently and thought it would be the perfect quote to start off Zach's 4 Questions, because if you knew him, you would know that it is quite fitting. After two years of working with Zach, through the numerous chats about life, faith and other great mysteries, the things he wants to do to change the world won't be done by taking the beaten path, but rather, by creating a new one.

You also need to know that he’s hilarious. Since he recently transferred to our Houston branch, I think it’s safe to say that the Austin office is now approximately 89.3% less funny. Plus I don't have anyone to beat in bowling. All that to say, like I have said so many times before, it’s nice to get to work with amazing people, because I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t survive the 8-5 without it.

Thanks Zach for being awesome, doing 4 Questions and everything in between :). Even though you’re not in Austin anymore, I'm gonna say the best is yet to come and can’t wait to see what that looks like!

Well, I recently moved to the city I swore I would never live, Houston. I know things happen for a reason, so I'm hoping for the best. Also, there is no way I would have imagined the metaphysical growth and experiences that have taken me to a different level.

Experience more in life and try to avoid the unnecessary tangible desires.

3. What is one of the happiest moments of your life?

This one is a tie, I would have to say seeing my niece and nephew after they were born. It is pretty crazy to see life in its purest form.

4. What is one thing you want the next generation to know?

Question everything in life, and come up with your own conclusions....but don't be stupid about it.

I like to pretend I'm a painter, but in reality if you hand me paint, some brushes and a blank canvas, you're going to get a mess. Monet, Da Vinci, Van Gogh and any other amazing painters? I don't stand a chance. But that doesn't mean I don't love playing around with it! And this past weekend I have found one of my new favorite places! If you've never heard of Painting with a Twist, you need to check it out. A local artist takes you step by step though a painting and not only is it fun, but you really do create something pretty! A couple of friends and I decided to go to a Japanese themed night where the money was donated to Japanese earthquake relief. Win-win.

And since we have an empty bedroom that we have officially deemed Gallery 1028/Max's Room, we have a place to hang up our masterpieces. Really professional stuff, especially since they are exactly the same and right next to the paintings hangs our targets from the shooting range. But hey, that target would make my mama proud!

Or maybe she might wonder who I am and where her California-raised daughter is.

Zambia, The Remix | Africa Photography

This past week a friend of mine asked me about trips to Africa because she was finally going to sign up and go on a missions trip. I am SOOO excited for her. My trip to Africa changed my life. And not just in the “I’m supposed to say that about church trips” kinda way, but the kind of change that alters my life. Example? Moving thousands of miles away from everything I have ever known. Anyway, my friend asked if she could use some pictures from my trip as she starts planning and I am so excited I could help in a small way!

Going through the 2007 pics brought back such awesome memories (and a chance to look at how my photography has improved :). I was reminded of how amazing that trip was, how amazing the people who went on the trip are and the people we met, how much I want to go back, just how beautiful Africa and what true joy looks like.

If you have been around for a while, these pictures are nothing new (some hang on my wall), but if not, please enjoy some of the faces and beauty that made my life better.

There and Back Again | Austin, Texas Photography

I want life to be easy, but I know it never is going to be (and before you think I'm going all Debbie Downer on you, I promise I'm not). I know everything that happens has a purpose and/or makes me/you stronger, but man, so I wish it were easy sometimes.

A lot of recent conversations with friends have been around this topic (maybe it's because we’re far too quickly inching towards 30 or have already made it there). Like shouldn't we have our careers in order (still waiting for someone to pay me to travel the world with my camera)? Shouldn't people our age own a home by now? And for the love of English crumb cakes, we should start a blog about the whole not married thing and the advice that is so freely given. I know people mean well, but sometimes it's really funny.

But while my life has not turned out like I thought it would when I was 18 (and hal.le.lu.jah it has not), I can look back and smile at where it has taken me. I have seen more of God’s promises and love because of it and if life were easy, I wouldn’t be who I am today (and I know friends would say the same thing). I recently decided to do a study through Esther and came across a quote from the study: "When we trust our lives to the unseen but ever-present God, He will write our lives into His story and every last one of them will turn out to be a great read. With a grand ending. And not just in spite of those catastrophes. Often because of them...live and see." Beth Moore

So here’s to life…the crazy, the good, the hard times, the adventures, the laughs and all the memories in between!

Turns out the first sentence was actually from someone who, to emphasize her point, included Martin Luther King's quote. Either way, I really liked what was said, because it's true. Hate is only conquered by love. And as MLK also said, "Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy to a friend."

I want everything I do to have a greater purpose. My life isn't my own and when I think of how I want to run a business, I like to be inspired by what other companies are doing who have the same heart beat as mine. One of my favorites is Tom's Shoes (which I would own a pair in each color if I could) and thanks to my friend Sheena, I was recently introduced to another business that has an inspiring way of doing things.

The company: Warby Parker. The product: Glasses. You buy a pair, they give a pair away (millions of people around the world don't have access to proper eye care). Plus a pair with lenses only costs $95.00. If you are like me and have needed glasses since 7th grade, you know that is an awesome price. Plus they have such great styles (Thompson and Langston being some of my favs). Although I tried the Potter look and I just can't rock that one folks. I just can't.

Anyway, in San Fran they have a showroom (other locations include OKC, Portland, Chicago and NYC), so that's what we did. I'm pretty such The Perish Trust is one of the coolest stores ever.

4 Questions with Sheena | San Francisco, California

When I stop and think about the amazing friends in my life, I can't help but smile at the random ways God brought them into my life. Perfect Example: Sheena. After she decided upon the greatest school ever for graduate work, Sheena answered a roommate posting and moved in with my college roommates. Since I was already living in Texas at this time, I heard tons of stories about how awesome Sheena was, how she was funny and how amazing of a chef she was. I figured she must be pretty awesome if my friends loved her. As soon as I met her (on a random Cali weekend visit), all facts were proven correct - especially after our first travel adventure together (it's amazing how much you can learn about someone by traveling with them) last year to New York. Only added more awesome points!

Even though we don't get to hang out all the time (Wisconsin and Texas are a few miles apart), the friendship that has formed is such a blessing in my life. There's still tons of laughs, jokes to play and of course travel adventures (Austin, San Fran and soon Italy!).

Sheena - you are an amazing woman with incredible strength and thanks for always being so encouraging, being an example of inner beauty (and of course dropping it!), and just being awesome!

Looking forward to the next adventure of getting slightly lost, laughs and lots of photog skills!

1. What is something about your life right now that you would never imagined 5 years ago?

I never would have imagined I would be living in my hometown, Sheldon, Wisconsin (population 256....). If you would have asked me that five years ago, I would have said I would be living in another country or in Southern California. I moved back to Wisconsin last February because of my father's illness and have been thankful to be close to family (despite the freezing cold weather!). I am humbled that God brought me back to where I grew up... to where all 256 people know my name and story. I also wouldn't have imagined 5 years ago that I would have done so much traveling. I will have been in 29 countries after next months' travel! I have been blessed!

2. What is one thing that you would go back and do differently if you could?

I really don't have any regrets because I know each of my mistakes, ahem, "learning experiences" have made me the person I am today (I know, so cliché). But if I could change one thing, I would not have spent so much time being self-conscious and worrying what others thought of me. I know I missed many "God's-prompting moments" because of fear of stepping out. Who knows what could have happened if I would have listened to and acted on those prompts!

3. What is one of the happiest moments of your life?

One of the happiest moments in my life was when I was living in Southern California. I felt like I was at exactly the place I was meant to be at that time. Seeing and feeling God's provision and plan was incredible! Other happy moments are when I'm able to explore the world (or my backyard) with the people I love.

4. What is one thing you want the next generation to know?

I want the next generation to know how incredibly special they are and that they can be used by God for so much good. I want them to know how big and limitless our God is, and I want them to know an authentic relationship with Him. I want them to know peace and unconditional love, I want them to know community. And I want them to know the amazing adventures they can have when they step out of their comfort zones!

"Welcome to the Rock" | San Francisco Travel Photography

One of my favorite movies is The Rock. Who doesn't love some Sean Connery with that fantastic accent, Nicolas Cage, Ed Harris, explosions, fight scenes and saving the world? Personally that's my recipe for an enjoyable two hours of mind numbing television. Every time I am visiting San Francisco, I make sure I go on the Alcatraz tour because it is so fascinating! I highly recommend it if you are ever in the area!

This was one of my favorites

This room was where sick inmates would go, but also solitary confinement. I guess they wanted to give them one last look at the sun before being locked up.

Below is the entrance to one of the solitary cells. One inmate told the story that once he got locked in, he would remove a button from his shirt, throw it in the cell and then make the time pass, by looking for the button. Wow.

Just one question - what the hey is steamed wheat and stewed fruit? Sounds completely unappetizing, but if anyone has tried it and I am mistaken, please feel free to let me know.

I'm sorry if you are overwhelmed by the creativity of my title, but that's what happens when it gets past 9:00 p.m. Things get crazy. What I'm actually excited to share about is some photos from my recent travel adventure to Nor Cal. Even though the hills can be a little too steep, the wind seems to cut through any amount of layers and it's really easy to get lost, I love San Francisco! The food, the state, the history all amount to a good time and some awesome photo opportunities. Four days was much too short to enjoy and relax, but I'll take that over zero days. I'll start the posts with some from the Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39. Enjoy a little bit of San Fran!

You wouldn't think watching sea lions would be at all enjoyable, but it is actually quite entertaining! They can be feisty fellas! It's funny to see them fight, watch the little ones wake up all the adults or watch the chunky one try to get on board.

A close friend is turning 30 and we have a thing where we like to surprise friends with a trip to a city that none of us live in (last year was NYC). As I finish this post and read through Jamie’s answers for the 4 Questions Project, I keep smiling because I am reminded how lucky I am to have her as a friend. Really. She’s real, she’s honest and has such a passion for life and people. I love it!!!

Having gone to high school and then college together, I have known Jamie for more than half my life (dang…that makes me feel really old). While we knew each other in high school (she graduated the year before me), it wasn’t until we were both at Azusa Pacific that we became really close. Going to a small school has its benefits. And it probably also helps that we share a love for traveling (this girl has me beat!!), eating, chocolate and moving across the country.

I know that no matter where we live (whether in different states or countries), we’ll be a part of each other lives. Jamie! You are amazing, beautiful inside and out (and I’m not just saying that). Thanks for picking me up at the airport in the middle of the night, sharing life, always being able to pick up where we left off and inspiring me to live life to the fullest every day! Can’t wait until we get to hang again, whether Austin, Nashville or maybe even Italy. :)

1. What is something about your life right now that you would have never imagined 5 years ago?

I definitely would NEVER have imagined that I would be living in Nashville, TN. Being born and raised in Southern California, why would anyone want to leave? I never thought I would. For some reason though, I was ready for a new adventure. Having gone to Nashville a hand-full of times to visit a friend, I knew I liked it and I already knew a small group of people because of visiting my friend so many times. It also helps being a nurse, thankfully I knew I wouldn't have too much difficulty finding a job. So, I just decided to start over and move 2,000 miles away from everything I ever knew.

I actually have 2 answers to this question and the second one ties in to the first. I NEVER would have dreamed that I would marry a "Southern boy". And not just any, but one from Mississippi! This Orange County girl was going to marry a surfer who only ate organic food or something. But God definitely has a sense of humor.

2. What is one thing that you would go back and do differently if you could?

When I was in college, I spent one summer in Spain studying Spanish. That was my first time to Europe. I wish I could go back and somehow extend my trip to do more traveling while I was already over there. If I could have either left to go over there a week or so earlier, or stayed extra after the school term was over to travel, that would have been awesome. Once you are already all the way over there, you might as well make the most of it and do whatever you can. I am so glad I had that opportunity, but I would make the trip longer to have been able to experience more. And I would have spoken more Spanish while over there. I know I could have learned a lot more if I wouldn't have taken the easy way out at times and spoke English to my other American classmates.

3. What is one of the happiest moments of your life?

There are a few of those moments (wedding day, traveling the world, getting engaged, being loved on by a special group of people in El Salvador...) but I'll expand on this one: GRADUATING FROM NURSING SCHOOL! I did not think that was possible - it was never going to happen and it could not come soon enough. I loved college. I didn't love nursing school so much. I made amazing friends and I absolutely love my career now. It wasn't like I struggled with grades or the possibility of not passing, I actually did really well. But honestly, if I had to go through it again, even knowing how much I love being a nurse now, I don't think I would ever do it again. Graduation was amazing. But it was also amazing not just because it meant I was completely done with nursing school. It truly is a huge accomplishment and I really am proud that I graduated college. Anyone who has graduated should be super proud of that fact. So not only is it one my happiest moments, it is one of my proudest moments.

4. What is one piece of advice you want to pass along to the next generation?

Besides knowing the radness that is Saved By The Bell, I would love the next generation to know that they have worth. No matter what anyone tells them, each individual person is valuable. There is potential in everyone. If people truly believe this, the world would be a different place.

Y'all - it's crawfish time | Austin, Texas

I love the fact that there is so much culture in my family. Like the one Christmas we had turkey, tamales and gumbo. But if I am honest, in many ways my southern side has been neglected. But hey, I grew up in Southern California, so some of that is to be expected.

But no worries world wide web, that changed recently when I dug deep and grabbed hold of those southern roots at a Crawfish Boil. I’ve never had crawfish before, but I’ll always try something at least once (well, almost anything). And as I’ve mentioned before, I’m trying to expand my horizons in the seafood realm. The outcome? Crawfish is good! Although the corn may have been the spiciest thing I have ever eaten. In my LIFE. I need water just writing about it. It’s an experience too – like who knew they were actually alive hanging out in a cooler and then boiled throughout the day?

One day, one day I’ll have my own crawfish boil and you can all come! But hopefully I’ll be able to enjoy a little crawfish before then. So am I missing any other fun southern food outings??

Nikki + Charlie | Nashville, TN Wedding

As he turned around and saw his beautiful bride, his eyes widened and jaw seemed to drop to the floor. And I don’t blame him, Nikki looked stunning. They shared a few moments together before the ceremony and in that moment I was reminded of how beautiful a love between man and wife can be.

That was just one of the amazing moments from Nikki and Charlie’s wedding. It helped that it was a day of perfect weather, I was in Nashville, the wedding party was hilarious and awesome, oh and the fact that Charlie and Nikki can tear it up salsa dancing. That’s what I call legit.

Charlie – you are one lucky man! Nikki is an amazing woman. I’m glad we’ll be neighbors and I am so ready to go salsa dancing with you guys! Nikki – you are beautiful! For real – inside and out. I was so blessed to have called you a roommate for the past few months and I am excited to see you in this new chapter of life. I’m so glad that it will start off in Austin too!

4 Questions with Casey | Austin, Texas

When I moved to Austin with my friend Mariko, we knew no one. Meaning we had no friends. And I'm not exaggerating. No jobs either. But one thing we did have was a church. In my previous trips to Austin, I had visited Austin Stone Community Church and knew that was going to be my church home. I love that church. Anyway, before our move, I emailed some missional community groups (think bible study/home group/awesome friends mixed into one) because I wanted to get connected as soon as I moved out, part so I wasn't a complete loser with one friend and part I wanted to get involved with my church.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I mean, I now lived in Texas. What if they all wore cowboy hats and were farmers? Because that's all Texas is right? Wow - would I be out of place. Good thing stereotypes can often be wrong (no, I did not live on the beach and surf everyday) and good thing normal people live in Texas too - even really amazing people!

Bringing me to the only and only Casey. She was one of the first people I met out here at group. I am sooo glad I did. She's hilarious and has the best stories from her job as a teacher. EVER. I wish you could hear just one. Not only will she always have you laughing, but she is truly a compassionate person who genuinely cares about her friends, students, family. She's the kind of friend you know you can count on. Plus she rocks it while in front of the camera!

Thanks Casey for always having me laugh and sharing your story. I'm so glad I can call you a friend, especially since something hilarious usually happens when we hang out. You're awesome and I can't wait to see what the Lord has planned for you next :)

1. What is something about your life right now that you would never imagined 5 years ago?

I don't think I ever imagined being 30 and single. I pictured myself teaching, and I envisioned being in Austin; but 30 and single wasn't something I imagined. I subscribed to the idea that I would go to college, graduate, get a job, get married, and have 2.5 kids and a picket fence within a matter of years. But God knew best: I'm thirty, single, thankful, and happy.

2. What is one thing that you would go back and do differently if you could?

I would have gotten my Masters while still in the "school mode". Now that I have been away from classes, tests, and projects, I don't have the motivation to go back.

3. What is one of the happiest moments of your life?

I can't think of just one, but I do know that the happiest moments of my life all contain the same characters: my family. Being with them brings deep joy and pure happiness. . . . often with laugh-until-you-cry moments. For me, life is happy when I'm with the ones I love. . . and it helps that my family loves so well!

4. What is one thing you want the next generation to know?

I want future generations to know the love of Christ and to have the courage to be who God made them to be. Life is too short to settle for less than God designed you to be.

Before heading to Nashville yesterday, I realized that about 98.632% of the time I travel (fly) alone. I was talking with a friend who isn’t a fan of flying and doing my best to help make her upcoming flying experience a bit easier and realized that, as DeRulo would say, I tend to ride solo. I’m guess somewhere along the way I got used to it. It makes for some epic people watching in the airport, excellent use of my kindle app and extra time to jam to Usher, Sinatra, Otis Redding, Needtobreathe or whoever else pops up on the iTunes. Plus something crazy usually happens. Snow storms, canceled flights, dented planes, highly intoxicated people being removed from the plane, you know every day stuff.

I also think I might be the most productive while I am waiting for my flight or in the air. So that probably means I should fly more and longer distances, like to Europe.

The following photos have absolutely nothing to do with flying, but I had extra time in the the airport and since it seems to be a random Friday post because my head might explode from the flight delays and unhelpful car rental companies, here’s a pic of Mariko. A Letter

Dear people who I have photographed and will photograph in the future,

Always being behind the camera, I forgot how awkward it can be to be in front of it. This past weekend I worked with an amazing photographer and for the first time in a long time was actually the one getting photographed. (Part of my re-branding ideas) I bet there were some winners in there, especially since I laughed most of the time. The last photo experience I remember was my senior portraits. In high school. It's been a while. All that to say, I know how you feel. My memory is refreshed.

What's funny though is that doing something that is kind of uncomfortable, something that forces you to stretch yourself is one of the best things you can do. I learned a lot from a great photographer, I know he created some great photos (even if the subject was a bit dorky in front of the camera), and as cheesy as it sounds, I totally grew as a photographer from the experience.

So, friends, go crazy and get some pictures taken. It's fun!

4 Questions with Christine | Austin, Texas Photography

When we were in search of a new receptionist/someone-to-help-me-not-go-insane at my company, it was a long process. There were some really nice people I interviewed, but no one I was sold on and wanted to hire. It seemed like the process took weeks, but I wanted/needed someone who would do quality work that I could trust with any project, but also be really fun to work with. About 5 seconds into interviewing Christine, I knew wanted to hire her. After the interview, I went to my boss and said, "If you don't hire her, I quit." Yes, I was being a bit dramatic, (because let's be honest, a girl has to pay rent), but I was an instant fan and knew she would be a great person to work with.

Over these past months my instincts have proved right and I can't say enough how fun it is to work with her. Thanks Christine for being willing to share some of your story, the hourly laughs at work, HCWC :), making fun of Texas and for just being an amazing person and friend!

1. What is something about your life right now that you would never imagined 5 years ago?

I never in a million years would have guessed that I would be living in Texas. I never thought I would move far away from home, especially halfway across the country to a state I thought nothing more than deserts and cowboys. I am very close with my family and always pictured moving into a house just a few neighborhoods away from parents and two sisters, and raising our children together. But life had much different plans and now I am here in Austin and I love it! It was very difficult at first to be away from my family but with the help of my wonderful boyfriend, Ben, I was able to realize that no matter how far apart we are I will always have my family and distance won’t separate the bond we share. Living in Austin has helped me to grow up and open my eyes. I love this city and can see myself here for a long time.

2. What is one thing that you would go back and do differently if you could?

This is a really hard question for me because I strongly feel that all things that happened in the past made me who I am now and brought me to the place in life that I’m at now. But if I had to pick one, I would say I wish I would have stood up for myself more when I was younger. I was always teased and bullied at school because I was the nerdy kid who loved learning and homework. It took me a long time to realize that I only need to please myself. If others don’t like who I am, or what I say or how I act, that’s their problem. If I am happy with myself that is all that matters. When thinking back on old situations where I was presented with someone belittling or bullying me, I always think, “Oh I should have told them this” or “I wish I had stood up for myself”. But that is all in the past and I am now able to stick up for myself and realize that I am strong and confident. If someone has a problem with that…then oh well!

3. What is one of the happiest moments of your life?

I would have to say one of the happiest moments I can think of is when Ben asked me to move to Austin with him. Cheesy I know, but it’s true! We had been dating for about a year or so and he was getting close to graduation. He always knew he wanted to go into police work and he has always loved Austin, so he applied for a spot with the Austin Police Department. I was really upset and nervous at first because I didn’t want to be left behind, but I also wasn’t sure if he thought we were serious enough for me to go with him. Even before he got accepted to the academy he asked me if I would go with him. Obviously I said yes, and here I am living in Austin, Texas!

4. What is one thing you want the next generation to know?

The world would be much better place if we helped each other more. Right now I feel like everyone is so self obsessed. Take a step back, stop worrying just about yourself and start caring for others a little bit more.

4 Questions with Jaci | Austin, Texas Photography

Jaci is in my top list of friends to recruit to Austin. And if you hang out with her for more than 2.8 minutes, you'll know why. One reason - she's hilarious. If she is telling a funny story at a restaurant, like the Rain Forest Cafe in San Antonio, don't take a sip of any kind of beverage until the story is over. This piece of advice might be from personal experience or hypothetical. I shall neither confirm nor deny.

Another reason? She makes any trip/vacation 13 times more awesome. Whether on a subway or ferry in NYC, walking in Memphis or driving through tornado like weather in Oklahoma, she will make the adventure 18 times as funny and 27 times more memorable.

Oh and she is one of the most encouraging people I know. Whether it is with students she works with in youth ministry, family or friends, Jaci is the kind of person you can always turn to. Plus she knows how to give advice that’s legit – she’s getting a Masters in Counseling.

Jaci – you are such a blessing in my life and I am waiting for the call that you are moving to Austin. Austin won’t know what to do with us :)

1. What is something about your life right now that you would have never imagined 5 years ago?

I would never have imagined that I would be where I am today with a job that I really love (Director of Student Ministries) and be far from family, but be surrounded by good friends and forming a new family with my church family. I also would never imagine being able to do all things that I have been able to do; traveling, spending time two summers in Africa and being connected with people all over the US and now the world.

2. What is one thing that you would go back and do differently if you could?

If I could go back and do something differently, I think I would really work on dealing with conflict and relationships (not necessarily all bad stuff), but learning to communicate better with people that I love, my family and friends. Especially when I was younger, in high school and college, I would have those stronger relationships a lot earlier that I do now. I didn’t work as hard as I do now.

3. What is one of the happiest moments of your life?

I don’t know if I could say the happiest because there are a lot of the “happiest times,” but over the past years the happiest times have been when I have been able to get away from work and everyday life and be able to laugh, play and travel with good friends. Like in New York City – that was one of the happiest times…getting to have weekends with the girls.

4. What is one piece of advice you want to pass along to the next generation?

One piece of advice is to be who you are, be who you want to be. Don’t settle for less than you want in life. Be willing to work hard to get where you want to be and have those things you want. Don’t settle; be who you are and enjoy it. Don’t let the little crazy stressful things in life get you down.

One of my favorite aspects of architecture is arches. I love how they create a pattern the eye can follow. This past weekend I hung out at the Blanton Museum of Art and while waiting in the courtyard for a friend, I snapped a few photos. Granted, it’s not the arches of say, Palace of Versailles, but not too bad either.

I recently saw a preview for a movie that I am sure will sweep the Oscars. It's called The Roommate. What I gathered from the 2.8 minute preview is that it's about a freakishly psychotic girl who wants to become like her new roommate and I think even tries to kill her. Like I said - movie of the year. And what are the odds? That's totally how my roommate experience was freshman year.

Totally.

Looking back, I am so thankful that the girls I was roomed with weren't crazy. I'm thinking memories from freshman year would have been a little different. Not only were they sane, but they turned out to be pretty amazing too. I lived with Christina all three years at Azusa Pacific and most of our time together included laughing, dancing, APU sporting events and eating. It was such an honor to be able to introduce a girl from Oregon to Del Taco. One semester we had the bright idea to take a philosophy class with another friend. Even if my life depended on it, I could not tell you one thing I learned from Philosophy 101. And that's probably because most of class we planned dinner or wrote notes back and forth.

Christina, you are an amazing person and friend. I am so glad APU roomed us together! After all the talks of life, dreams, goals, and of course boys, it's been so awesome to see where the Lord has taken you since then and I'm so excited that you are getting married this July to the boy who won your heart. Par-tay in OR!!!

1. What is something about your life right now that you would have never imagined 5 years ago?

Probably the biggest thing is that I have my Master’s Degree (in Special Education). That is something I never thought I would get.

2. What is one thing that you would go back and do differently if you could?

I have done a lot of things I wanted to do, but a couple are that I would have gone to APU all 4 years. But then if I did, I would have never met you guys (the best crew ever :). The other thing is that I would have gotten my Master’s degree somewhere else and not where I did.

3. What is one of the happiest moments of your life?

Times when family is all together, just spending that time together or when friends are all together.

4. What is one piece of advice you want to pass along to the next generation?

Try and make a difference in the world around them. Even if they make a small change in their immediate environment, it’s still making a difference for future generations. And also, live for God.

On my list of things I couldn’t live without (a list that also includes Del Taco, milk chocolate and airplanes) are really funny people. Because when it comes down to it, if you can’t laugh, what’s the point? And that’s one of the reasons it is so much fun to work with Michael. He can always make me laugh. He’s will say things that either has me laughing or shaking my head. It’s pretty much awesome.

But more than just a comedian, Michael is a great guy and friend. I think everyone needs a Michael in their lives. Someone you can count on, someone who will be honest with you, be there if you need and someone to tell the most crazy stories EVER. Times 3. Just ask him. I promise, you will not be disappointed in his story telling.

1. What is something about your life right now that you would have never imagined 5 years ago?

I would never have imagined that I would be out of the car business pursing a career in film, television, and just acting in general. I thought I had it all planned out. I’d finish school, work my way up through finance and then eventually run own my stores. Then one day I decided that it wasn’t what I wanted to do and gave it all up. I ended up selling copiers at Dahill just to be in a position to pursue the acting thing. I never thought in my life that I would be doing this.

2. What is one thing that you would go back and do differently if you could?

If I could go back and do something differently, it would have been my entire dating life in college. I would have done that completely differently. We won’t go into details, but let’s say I burned some bridges.

3. What is one of the happiest moments of your life?

I think it was freshman or sophomore year in college for Mother’s Day. My brothers and I went to one of those picture places/studios and did some portraits, a silly goofy photo and then a serious one, dressed all nice for my mother because she always wanted to have a photo of the boys. That was a blast with my brothers and then my mom’s reaction when she got the photo.

4. What is one piece of advice you want to pass along to the next generation?

Listen to your parents. You may not realize it now, but they really do know what’s best and they always have your best interest in mind.

Once upon a time I had a goal to photograph every mission in California. Then I moved to Texas.

I'm not sure where the fascination came from, maybe it was the 5th grade missions lesson we all had to go through, maybe it's the Spanish architecture that I love so much, or maybe because my parents got married in one. Whatever the reason, before I headed to the land of the Tejanos and left the great sunshine state, I managed to visit a few of them and take a few photos. Going through the pictures reminds me of California Mexican food and the beach. Time for a Cali visit :)

Right now I am looking out my window and there are little kiddies making snowmen. This makes me happy! A friend on facebook said it best when she said "AND because it's Texas, it will all be gone tomorrow and I won't have to deal with it at all." That's why I love Tejas.

This morning I grabbed the camera to document this annual Austin event. Then my fingers started turning blue and numb. I'm not real keen on numb fingers, so my snow time was rather short. Can't help it - I from Cali :)

Ground Zero 2003

I've been on an archive kick. I'm finding DVDs of old pictures and most of them I completely forgot about. A lot were also shot with film, so I'm really enjoying going through them and I am sure more will make an appearance on the blog.

This was from a trip I took for college graduation with my two good friends in 2003. We thought NYC would be a perfect way to celebrate surviving college and it was a to the wesome. Ground Zero has changed quite a bit since then, but this cross and American flag that were recovered from the rubble and displayed in 2003 is something I won't forget.

I recently purchased a new lens and have started trying different things with Photoshop. I wish I could spend all day driving around shooting and then playing on my computer because I love every aspect of the process. But since I can't, I try to shoot often, even if it is in my own apartment. Usually I make my friends be models, but since my cat does absolutely nothing, I decided to use him as a model. I got one picture out of it. He'll move, he'll turn his head and then want snacks. Like I said, so high maintenance.

4 Questions with my Dad | Austin, Texas Photography

This was one of my favorite 4 Questions sessions for numerous reasons. First, it is my dad and I am a fan. Second, I convinced him to brave Louisiana winter chill and go to his old high school (an abandoned, dilapidated group of a few buildings) to take some pictures. I’m not sure when the school shut down, but I think it was decades ago. Not only were there plenty of photo opps, but as I mentioned last week, hearing my dad reminisce and tell stories of the time he almost got jumped (if you knew my dad this would be extra hilarious because he is not a fightin man :), walk around his homeroom, share about dances, basketball games and a football team that was terrible had me laughing and realizing just how blessed I am to call this man my dad.

So much in life, especially this past year, has shown me the depth of love, character, strength and faith of my dad. So hopefully through these 4 questions, you see a little of what I see every day :)

1. What is something about your life right now that you would have never imagined 5 years ago?

I would never have imagined that my wife would be recovering from open-heart surgery. I also wouldn’t have imagined some of the family illnesses [nephew having stomach removed from cancer] going on.

2. What is one thing that you would go back and do differently if you could?

If I could have done something differently I would have come to know Jesus and have a real relationship with Him a lot sooner in my life. God always does things the way He wants to, but in the case of knowing Christ, you always would have liked to have known Him sooner.

3. What is one of the happiest moments of your life?

There are a lot of moments in my life that are memorable, so I wouldn’t just pick one. I would say my wedding and the kids coming into our marriage. Also coming to know Christ and serve Him. It’s hard to separate those, so I would say those three are the top memories.

4. What is one piece of advice you want to pass along to the next generation?

The main one is, of course, for people to develop that relationship with God. In your life you should be focused on certain things you want to do. Whatever career or field you choose, my advice would be to do it diligently and work hard at what you do, so you can get the most out of it. Whether it be in your profession, in your ministry or whatever you do. And to be organized - it allows you to have more time to do what you are called to do.

I usually only post three images, but this was one of my favorite images and figured I could bend the rules. I am a rebel without a cause folks.

The Big Easy | Travel Photography

While most of my recent Louisiana trip was dedicated to time in the country, I couldn't be 30 minutes away from good ol NOLA (which stands New Orleans, Louisiana in case you had no clue, like me :), and not say hello. So for a few hours, my cousins and I roamed the French Quarter, browsed the shops, ate some Po Boys and enjoyed a little street car ride through St. Charles area (I was hoping to run into Mr. Brees, but no such luck :).

New Orleans - thanks for the pralines, good food and wonderful jazz music. You never fail me.

The famous Cafe du Monde - too bad the line was wrapped around the building...next time I'll get some beignets.

I remember the first time we met rather vividly. I was late in the game when it came to campus housing my freshman year in college so I was set up to live in the apartments. I was placed with transfer students, so I was the only freshman around. That was until our R.A. mentioned there was another freshman girl in the apts and she couldn’t wait to introduce us. Sometime later, as I sat in the corner at a friend’s place saying about three words (I can be shy in new situations), Erin came running in with a video camera filming and talking about meeting her new freshman b/f/f. I wasn’t quite sure what to make of this girl, but she was right, ever since that day I have been lucky enough to call Erin one of my best friends.

While I know I am biased, she is truly one of the most remarkable women you will ever meet. Having been through so much, she comes out smiling, laughing and inspiring everyone around her. If you ever need a running partner for a half or full marathon, she is your lady! She says funny things (even if she doesn’t mean for them to be funny :) and is a modern day Barnabas with her encouraging skills.

Erin, I can’t wait until you win some Teacher of the Year award. I’m totally going to the ceremony. Your faith is deep, real and I know it is changing people’s lives!

1. What is something about your life right now that you would have never imagined 5 years ago?

Exactly 5 years ago, I started my career in teaching and I would never have imagined how much I have learned from that because I have been all over in my career. Going through that has made me stronger. I have had the opportunity to work with all kinds of kids. I always thought that the first couple of years teaching I would have been in the same spot to get a foundation, I didn’t realize I would be bumped around so much. But it has made me rely on God and has stretched me in my faith and trusting in Him. I am okay with that and know what my passions are and I know that God will provide.

2. What is one thing that you would go back and do differently if you could?

In my life I really try to maximize the fun and each moment, therefore living with regrets is something that I try to avoid since I have been through circumstances to think that way. But if there is one thing that I would do differently, I would take a lot more pictures pre-college with the family. I have a lot, but I would have taken more if I had known not everyone would be here.

3. What is one of the happiest moments of your life?

Graduating from college. It was really hard for me in many ways, but I had lots of support. One of my fondest memories was when we had a big party (after graduation). That was happy because it was a good celebration of all the work that went in.

4. What is one piece of advice you want to pass along to the next generation?

Have a solid foundation of God. When you have a solid foundation of Christ, when you have a relationship with Him, you’re going be fine in life. Trust Him with all your heart, soul, and mind. No matter what happens in life, if He is the center, He will be your Provider, Comforter, Everything. It’s true and it really does happen when you trust Him and go out on faith.

A school long forgotten... | Travel Photography

I never tire of hearing stories from my parents – where they grew up, school days, how they met, and any other random story. Since I am not in Louisiana as much, I was excited about the opportunity to once again see the places my dad grew up, this time with a good camera.

My dad was the class of 1962 at Second Ward High School. He went to an all black high school because integration wasn’t a reality in Louisiana at that time. While walking around the now abandoned and overgrown campus, my dad told me stories of sharing one microscope for science, having limited resources, teachers who were inadequately prepared and his part in the civil rights movement. Hearing it from the lips of my dad makes that era so much more of a reality. I’m not just reading it from the pages of a history book, but hearing it from my dad who lived through it. While it's a sad reminder of that part of our nation’s history, knowing my dad, seeing what he made of his circumstances and how he didn’t allow that to stop him inspires me. I love that man!

Country Road, Take Me Home… | Travel Photography

While I love trying out new places and different adventures, when it comes down to it, I’m more of a city girl than anything else. Spending a few days in the country of Louisiana confirmed this notion. This past weekend I was there with my dad spending time with my grandpa Tat and aunt Nan. Friends, when I say country, I mean country. My dad, grandpa and uncles built some of these houses decades ago - in an era where my dad remembers living without electricity. What?!? This girl would not have survived.

These days there’s electricity and while there, I had nothing to do but relax. I’m not going to lie, that was very appealing. So in my ample free time, I took a stroll in the chilly weather documenting a little bit of Edgard. The nation’s most baller city.

So it used to be Lapeyrolerie Ln, then the sign got knocked down. And then they decided to change the name when making the new sign. I'm not even sure who "they" are, but at least the name is spelled right.

Winter all the cane is gone, but trust me, there's a lot of it.

We’re in the second week of January and things are moving way too fast for my liking. This week has been extra crazy and I’m sure me leaving tonight to Louisiana for an 8 hour road trip with my Dad has something to do with the insanity. But I am looking forward to seeing family, especially my grandpa Tat. I was really looking forward to seeing the Saints play while I was in New Orleans, but that didn’t go as planned last Saturday for the boys. Sports can break a girl’s heart. At least I still have another Laker 3-peat to look forward too.

Amid the chaos, I am really, really enjoying talking to people for the 4 Questions series. My interviews have mostly been of close friends or family so far, but even then I have heard the unexpected and it is encouraging, inspiring and funny. Here’s some of the amazing women soon to be featured – I can’t wait to share some of their story with you! And if you are interested or know someone who I need to talk to, please let me know – I would love to hang out and chat!

4 Questions with Nikki | Austin, Texas International Photography

The first time I met Nikki was at my first half marathon, where she and her sister Jessica (who is an amazing friend and person :) also ran the half, coming all the way from Nashville to run it. We’ll just say that they were slightly quicker on their feet than I was and finished before me, but were there to cheer me on as I crossed the finish line. So I knew she was pretty legit. And I’m just gonna throw this out there, but I think she was so impressed by my running talents that she decided to move to Austin to be one of my roommates.

Maybe that wasn’t the reason for her move to Austin, but I am glad she did! Nikki is simply put, awesome. And I don’t think it is possible for her to get angry. Seriously. She is one of those genuinely nice people, beautiful inside and out, who seek out ways to encourage and bless others. Whether it’s randomly bringing home some of our favorite sweets just because (can never go wrong with that) or praying with me over something going on, I can say without a doubt that I am beyond blessed to have Nikki as a roommate and friend. Plus she loves crazy Maxie too :)

The best part? There’s a boy named Charlie who fell in love with her and she’s getting married in a couple of months! Yay.for.love.

1. What is something about your life right now that you would never imagined 5 years ago?

That's an easy one...living in Austin, Texas! I never would have imagined something so great :)

2. What is one thing that you would go back and do differently if you could?

I would have made myself take WAY more pictures to capture the moments of my life especially during the last 5 years. I have so many mental snapshots but I wish that I would have them on print so that I could see and cherish them for the rest of my life and even pass them down. Hmmm...sounds like a good New Year's resolution!

3. What is one of the happiest moments of your life?

EVERY Christmas morning! You might think I'm joking, but every Christmas morning has seriously been the happiest time of my life. I can't even say it gets better every year because every year it is the best I could possibly hope for! Family, quality time together, snow (every now and then), Christmas music, the joy of Christ being celebrated, and good food! Seriously, who could ask for more?

4. What is one thing you want the next generation to know?

LOVE. No matter what, just love. Don't rationalize whether or not you should because you ALWAYS should. It might look different each time, but above all, lose yourself in pouring out the love that Christ has poured into you by loving Him and loving His people. Get outside yourself and your agenda so that you may love with the love that is not your own, but it founded and rooted in WHO GOD IS. When you love from a place of confidence in the fact that you are wholly and perfectly loved, there's no stopping you!

Clearly Oklahoma City didn’t think it was necessary to consult me before making weather plans for New Year’s. Because if they did, there is no way on God’s green earth that I would have opted for 20 degree weather to ring in 2011. And I know I can sometimes exaggerate, but friends, this time I am not. 2.0. degrees. I almost died. Or at least almost lost my toes. But minus the epically cold weather, it was a fantastic time!

Happy New Year everyone and here’s to another year of dreaming big, be willing to fail, living a life of love, changing the world one person at a time and maybe sticking to at least one of your New Year’s resolutions. :)

My summers growing up consisted of some pretty epic things. Beach trips, formation of approximately 87 different kinds of clubs with siblings and friends, my dog, exciting and random excursions planned by my mom, Disneyland and one of the best was having my cousins Jimmy and Laura staying at our house all summer long. They lived only 30 minutes away, but as a kid seemed like a million. My sister, Laura and I would usually team up against Malcolm and my cousin Jimmy, in which they thought it awesome to ransom our toys and other boyish mishaps. But did we laugh and have fun. I could probably write a dissertation on all the funny moments.

I love Laura like a sister and was really excited that she agreed to join 4 Questions! She’s an amazing woman, beautiful inside and out and has a story worth sharing, so I hope you enjoy! Thanks Laura for being awesome and joining my random, spaz idea over Thanksgiving. I’m so blessed to call you family and friend :)☺

1. What is something about your life right now that you would never imagined 5 years ago?

It would be going back to school. I recently went back to school after a 6-7 year hiatus and it’s the piece that’s been missing for the past couple of years. I just feel complete again with going back to school and feeling like I’m doing something that I know I could do.

2. What is one thing that you would go back and do differently if you could?

The whole college thing. I went to college for a year and a half after high school and then I dropped out and went to go work full time. If I would have continued with it I probably would already be in a career and more set than I am. Not that I’m not set, but a little more stable and have a career going.

3. What is one of the happiest moments of your life?

I know this is going to sound so cheesy (don’t worry – it doesn’t Laura, I promise!), but probably the first time Ricky (her husband) and I kissed. Look at me getting all teary-eyed…I had had a boyfriend before Ricky and I thought that I loved him (he was my first boyfriend), but [after we kissed] I knew instantly that I could not have loved that other guy. I couldn’t have. This is what love is. I went back into the house after and I was on cloud 9.

4. What is one thing you want the next generation to know?

Just be respectful to your family. In the job that I am in (working in the counseling office) with kids that are in and out, a lot of times I see students in there to be disciplined and I just see the disrespect that they have for the counselors and teachers, but also their family and I’ve come to realize that family should be first. It starts with family and you need to respect them.
